Upgraded jaxbeachtech.com to Drupal 7

I finally bit the bullet and upgraded the site to Drupal V7 - it was pretty straight forward, a few glitches here and there, but overall, pretty smooth. It was worth waiting a few years for the code to be nicely cleaned up :)

A BIG Thank You to all those clever people that contributed to the Drupal 7 experience - there is no doubt about it - it is a fantastic product.

A useful script for crontab (for all users) listings (let's see what running automagically...)

I have been working on a system inherited from several earlier sysadmins, and you have to keep an eye out for cron jobs running for other users - so it's nice to be able to review them all in one hit - just run this on a command line as root:

for user in $(cut -f1 -d: /etc/passwd); do echo $user; crontab -u $user -l; done

Apache .htaccess -how to 301 redirect from a non-WWW to WWW.mysite.com

I have had to mess with this way too many times, so just for the record, here is what works for me:
[this based on an Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu) system...]

  RewriteEngine on
  # this is for sites using port 80:
  RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mysite.com [NC]
  RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [L,R=301]

ReWriteEngine code to standardize on www URLs in apache

If you want to redirect all requests to your site to the www version, [www.mysite.com] all you need to do is add the following code to your .htaccess file:

Use Windows PowerShell to Delete All the Files in a Folder Older Than X Days?

Chrome beats Internet Explorer out...

Wow - it has happened...

The Chrome browser has for 1 full week edged out IE as the world's top browser.
That's BIG news for many different reasons, and shows just how persistent Google has been at pushing for a more open, standards-based browser solution.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall at the next Microsoft strategic planning session...

Drupal's magical "DRUSH" CLI

I have just spent a few hours getting familiar with this cool tool. Drush allows most housekeeping for Drupal sites to be done from a command line - it's a wonderful thing. Just take a look at how much I got done executing this single command:

sudo drush @veo up

And here's what it did for me:

donmc@jbt:/var/www/VEOffice$ sudo drush @veo up

Update status information on all installed and enabled Drupal projects:

Security+ Certified !

I finally sat the Security+ Cert exam from CompTIA last month. Passed it, but it is definitely not an easy exam - they require memorization of lots of niggly little things that really do nothing to ensure that you really know about Securty. it's more about knowing the names of certain exploits, viruses, etc.

Apache2 CMD to check VHOST Settings...

Well - since Apache V2 the ONLY command to use is apparently "apache2ctrl" as follows:
Note this command will parse the VHOST configs and dump them to StandardOut...

sudo /usr/sbin/apache2ctl -t -D DUMP_VHOSTS
